Above It All - Washington National Cathedral

Washington National Cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece. Perched on a hill overlooking the city it is the second largest cathedral in the country and the 6th largest in the world. It is a living work of art filled with stained-glass, hand-carved wood, and wrought iron. While a modern structure (finished in 1990) it is constructed in the old-world way and has no structural steel.

Sales Pitch

While massive, Washington National Cathedral can be a hidden to many visitors to Washington. Which is unfortunate because it is truly mind-boggling in its size and beauty. Huge stained-glass windows fill this space with colored light that changes as the sun moves across the sky. Come in late afternoon as organ practice fills the nave with sound perfect for the surroundings. This is a place where the nation gathers to celebrate inaugurations and mourn at state funerals. It is where Martin Luther King preached his last Sunday sermon from the Canterbury pulpit before his assassination. It’s a whimsical place with a Darth Vader gargoyle, a giant Lego replica that’s under construction, and hidden humorous pieces of stained glass, wrought iron, and carved stone. But you’ll only see them if someone helps you find them!

Perhaps. If you tour on a weekday you may see a procession and hear hoofs of the horses pulling the cassion as well as the band playing. You will hear the volley of three shots fired at the end of the graveside service.

Are there restooms?

Yes. When you arrive at the Visitors Center and near Arlington House and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Are we allowed to walk on the grass?

Certainly. One of the most enjoyable parts of ANC is wandering through and reading the headstone inscriptions. It gives a deeper meaning to the lives remembered here.

Embassy Row: Divinity and Diplomats

Most Embassy Row tours don’t venture far beyond Dupont Circle. But ours does. We see it all from top to bottom. This stretch of Massachusetts Avenue used to be called Millionaires Row where Gilded Age robber-barons built grand mansions. Today those mansions house most of Washington’s embassies, along with private clubs and statues of world heroes such as Mandela, Gandhi, and Churchill – and we will be right in the heart of it.

Sales Pitch

Embassy Row is an iconic area of Washington, D.C., where over 170 foreign missions are located. Washington’s Embassy Row runs along Massachusetts Avenue from Washington Cathedral down to Dupont Circle plays host to a stunning array of mansions (hence the area’s prior name ‘Millionaire’s Row’) and is packed with power, wealth, and intrigue.

A walk down Embassy Row takes you past three cathedrals, one mosque, and the extravagant homes of Gilded Age tycoons that now house diplomatic missions. We’ll bring this part of the city alive with stories of how this area was born and grew, the tales that you didn’t know before, and other fascinating facts about this unique avenue.

If you really want to see, feel, experience, and understand the good, the bad, and the ugly of Washington, DC, Off the Record Tours is who you're looking for. Tour Guide David Shaw does a fantastic job bringing an ironic humor to the stories, characters, and history of the city. My tour today with David was out to Mount Vernon and around Hains Point, and the National Mall. He had a great way of adding anecdotes, creating connections, and guiding the journey that left me wanting to learn more. He also shared interesting books, movies, and websites to do just that. Did you know you could spot a giant 15 foot blue cockerel on the roof of the National Museum of Art while driving up Pennsylvania Avenue? David does and will make sure you don't miss it.

Author: Brittany L | Date: 4/22/2021 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Being from Colorado I did not know much about DC history. But I do now, thanks to David’s extensive knowledge of the way Capitol Hill was developed. He wove important historical facts with stories that illuminated the people and the times that shaped the area. And doing it on foot provided the opportunity to see the area the way it would have been seen in the pre automobile era and burn off lunch by walking about 7,000 steps. I highly recommend David and this tour!

Author: Barry B | Date: 10/11/2020 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

I have lived in the DC area for 32 years and have been all around the city but everything I learned on the tour was brand new. David is very knowledgeable and was able to answer questions both on and off topic. I was especially happy to learn about the history and development of the city.
